Strategic Neighborhood Fund

What is The Strategic Neighborhood Fund (SNF)?

The Strategic Neighborhood Fund (SNF) is a transformative initiative that champions inclusive and resilient growth in Detroit’s neighborhoods. With leadership from Mayor Duggan, Invest Detroit, and the City of Detroit, SNF brings together the power of community, philanthropic funders, and the public sector support to revitalize the city’s most treasured communities.

Since 2016, SNF has raised $75 million from 19 generous philanthropic funders, which has leveraged over $110 million from the public sector. This funding is fueling the revitalization of Detroit through vibrant, walkable, and livable neighborhoods that stay true to the city’s rich history and culture.

Development
Developers of color or local community development organizations lead over 70% of SNF development projects.
Edward Carrington - The Ribbon

The Ribbon is the first project by Edward Carrington and Flux City Development, an emerging Black-led developer in Detroit. This $8.2 million project will create 18 new affordable apartments along East Warren, with 14 units at or below 80% AMI and four units at or below 60% AMI, all guaranteed to remain affordable for the next 25 years.

The Strategic Neighborhood Fund contributed $1.4M to the development, helping to support affordable housing and commercial growth in the neighborhood. Additional funding came from the Detroit Housing for the Future Fund and other local partners, making The Ribbon a vital addition to the East English Village and Morningside communities.

Garnet James - Terri's Cakes

Terri’s Cakes is a family-owned bakery founded by Garnet James, inspired by her late mother, Terri, who started the business from their home in 1977. Known for their handcrafted cakes and signature floral designs, Terri’s Cakes has become a beloved local brand, specializing in high-quality baked goods made from scratch.

The new brick-and-mortar location provides nearly 5,000 square feet of space, offering a welcoming atmosphere for customers to enjoy their famous carrot cake and custom-designed treats.

By providing essential financial support, SNF helped transform Terri’s Cakes into a commercial anchor for the East Warren corridor.

Marcus Jones & Akunna Olumba - Detroit Pizza Bar

Detroit Pizza Bar is a Black-owned restaurant in the Livernois-McNichols (Live6) neighborhood, founded by developers Akunna Olumba and Marcus Jones. The 4,500-square-foot restaurant offers a mix of quick and full-service dining and features a rooftop terrace for guests to enjoy during the warmer months.

Detroit Pizza Bar is part of a broader movement to revitalize the McNichols corridor, alongside other SNF-backed projects like the Sawyer Art Apartments. The restaurant serves as both a gathering place and a symbol of positive change, contributing to the neighborhood’s ongoing transformation.
